3-Ingredient Homemade Chocolate Syrup
It’s no surprise that store-bought chocolate syrups (and ice cream toppings) contain preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, and artificial flavors…yuck!
Yet, most of us enjoy a good ice cream sundae occasionally, or perhaps our kids beg us for chocolate milk to drink? Now you don’t need to feel bad about giving in, since this syrup is made with only real ingredients (no refined sugar) and tastes so rich!

- Stir into plain milk (hot or cold)
- Drizzle over ice cream

Ingredients
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup honey
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 tsp sea salt (optional)
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine cocoa powder, honey, water and salt. Bring to a boil, whisking frequently to remove lumps and to keep from burning. Continue whisking for 1-2 minutes, then remove from heat.
- Allow syrup to cool for 5-10 minutes before adding the vanilla (optional).
- Store in a mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks. (You will most likely use it up by then!)
- To make chocolate milk: stir 1 Tbsp syrup into one (8 oz) glass of milk. Add additional syrup to taste, if desired. (For hot cocoa, simply heat a mug of milk in the microwave for 60-90 seconds before stirring in syrup.)
Notes
I use mason jars to store so many things (like these cinnamon apple overnight oats )! I love these one-piece mason jar lids , which are easy to screw on, easy to clean, and freezer safe--they are a must-have! You can also mark your jars (before storing) with these amazing dissolvable labels , which easily wash off and won't leave sticky residue on your jars!
