Blackberry Chia Jam is a simple and delicious homemade jam made from chia seeds, fresh blackberries, and honey. So easy to make!

Last summer, a good friend invited my kids and I to her home to pick blackberries from her overgrown gigantic berry patch. She had been harvesting fresh plump berries from her patch nearly every day, and still had such an abundance she couldn’t keep up with it all! We were thrilled to be of service, knowing we’d get a yummy snack out of this invitation!
Since I knew she had no shortage of berries, (and because she had confessed to me that her family was almost tiring of eating so many of the fresh berries), I decided to bring a few extra ingredients along to make a fresh jam with any extra berries we didn’t expect our families to eat in the next few days. She was delighted to try something new!

How to Make Chia Seed Jam
Homemade chia seed jam is SO simple to make. Just 10 minutes on the stove top, and only three ingredients! You will not regret trying this recipe, especially if you have an abundance of fresh summer berries (like my friend!), or simply want a delicious alternative to sugar-laden storebought jams.
Ingredients:
- Berries of choice (fresh or frozen; I used freshly picked blackberries)
- Honey
- Chia seeds
A few notes:
- You may use any type of berries for this recipe. If using frozen berries, allow to defrost first.
- For a smoother consistency, blend ingredients in a blender or food processor before or after cooking (before filling your jars).
- This recipe yields approximately 2 cups jam — enough to fill one pint (16 oz) mason jar, or two half-pint (8 oz) mason jars.
Why Use Chia Seeds in Jam?
When liquid is combined with chia seeds, they swell up as they absorb the liquid, which creates a thick gel. This makes them a perfect superfood substitute for pectin in chia seed jam. You’ll love the thick, spreadable texture of this fruit jam! Bonus, it’s sugar free and super healthy!

Ingredients
- 3 cups fresh blackberries, washed (or frozen, allow to defrost)
- 3 tbsp chia seeds
- 2 tbsp honey
Instructions
- Put the berries into a saucepan over medium heat and mash the berries as they begin to heat up. If they are not very juicy, you can add a little water to help them break down.
- When the berries have broken down to a saucy consistency, remove the pan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool a little before adding the honey and chia seeds. Stir to combine.
- Transfer the jam to two half-pint jars and allow to cool completely. Once the jam has reached room temperature, place the jars into the refrigerator to set (at least one hour).
- Store jam in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to one week.
